Torrential Downpours Aggravate Situation for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, UN Warn
Persistent precipitation over the last seven days have intensified the precarious living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to humanitarian organizations.
"Horrendous" Conditions Brings Grave Threats
A spokesman detailed the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with precipitation so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the terrain.
"The recent weather was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The downpours were so intense... And the gusts were so forceful," said the spokesperson.
Authorities voice significant concern that minors residing in tents in damp clothing will contract hypothermia and additional sicknesses.
Fatalities and Extensive Damage
Medical officials have reported that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in structural failures triggered by the storms.
Other reports put a increased death toll. Authorities reported that numerous homes had fully given way and scores had been partly destroyed.
