Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
