McLaren Points Finger at Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after impact between team drivers

A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the start of the US GP sprint race.

McLaren F1 team executives Zak Brown and Stella pointed to competitors for the collision between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, crashed into his team-mate after colliding with Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The incident took both team drivers from the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash

Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, stated to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the front was "inexperienced", adding: "Clearly Nico drove into Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."

The team team principal Andrea Stella stated: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to race."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with appropriate caution. Go to the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."

McLaren clarified that the team principal was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Incident

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he chose to cut back to try to pass Norris.

Piastri had a better start than Norris and initially competed on the outer side on the ascending approach to the turn.

However he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on Norris on the way out, only to collide with the Sauber driver.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then were struck and it sent me into Norris. A shame."

Norris commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Further back events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more people behind just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Post-Crash and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will review the crash with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 10 PM BST on Saturday.

Stella said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."

"Championship points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A little more prudence would be beneficial for everyone."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers says - we missed out on eight points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
