Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their progress".
The prominent academic, who once led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's decision to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Political Context
This announcement comes after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on recently to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he plans to endorse the bill, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his base.
Email Contents
A batch of financier-linked messages disclosed by the Congressional committee recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with he often trying to introduce Summers to influential world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, the former official stated he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore trust and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that he was no longer affiliated with the institution.
The former official joined the board of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
